Developmental Delay

Developmental Delay

Watching your child grow and reach new milestones is an exciting part of parenting. While most children progress through the stages of development in a fairly predictable order, every child develops at their own pace. Some children reach milestones a little later than others, while some experience developmental delays that may benefit from additional support.

Developmental delay can occur for many reasons. Sometimes there is an underlying medical condition or diagnosis, while other children are simply slower to reach milestones and go on to catch up with their peers. The important thing to remember is that there is a wide range of what is considered "normal" development, and many children make excellent progress with the right support.

What is developmental delay?

Developmental delay is when a child does not reach expected milestones in one or more areas of development. These areas include:

  • Motor skills – supporting their head, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and walking.
  • Language and communication – babbling, making sounds, copying noises, waving, understanding words and saying first words.
  • Thinking and learning (cognitive skills) – exploring toys, understanding cause and effect, problem-solving and play.
  • Social and emotional skills – smiling, engaging with others, playing games such as peek-a-boo and responding to familiar people.

If a child has significant delays in two or more developmental areas, this may be referred to as Global Developmental Delay (GDD).

When should I be concerned?

As a general guide, you may wish to seek advice if, over several months, your child is not developing motor, language, social or learning skills at a similar rate to other children of the same age.

Remember that every child develops differently, and milestones are only guides rather than strict deadlines. However, trusting your instincts as a parent is important. If you have concerns, speak to your GP, health visitor or paediatrician.

It's also important to remember that babies born prematurely are assessed using their corrected age, meaning their developmental milestones are adjusted based on how early they were born.

Why is early intervention important?

If your child is not reaching expected milestones, early intervention can make a significant difference.

Research consistently shows that identifying developmental concerns early and starting appropriate therapy gives children the best opportunity to develop new skills and reach their potential. Whether there is an underlying reason for the delay or your child simply needs additional support, early intervention helps build strong foundations for future development.

At Positive Steps, we have seen first-hand the positive impact that early physiotherapy and targeted intervention can have. We are passionate about helping children develop confidence, strength and movement skills through fun, child-led therapy that supports both the child and their family.

Purposeful play

One of the most effective ways to support development is through purposeful play.

Purposeful play involves using fun, motivating activities to encourage children to practise specific movements and skills while they explore and learn about the world around them. Rather than feeling like therapy, children are encouraged to develop through play using toys and activities that naturally capture their interest.

From a physiotherapy perspective, purposeful play encourages different positions and movements that help improve strength, balance, coordination and overall motor development. By making movement enjoyable, children are more motivated to practise new skills and progress towards their next developmental milestone.

Why is crawling so important?

At Positive Steps, we are particularly passionate about the importance of crawling.

Crawling is much more than simply getting from one place to another. It helps develop:

  • Shoulder and upper body strength
  • Core stability
  • Hip strength and development
  • Coordination between both sides of the body
  • Balance and postural control
  • The foundations needed for future movement skills

Some children may be delayed in crawling or move in different ways, such as commando crawlingbottom shuffling or bunny hopping. While these movement patterns are common, they can sometimes indicate that a child would benefit from an assessment to ensure they are developing the strength and movement patterns needed for future milestones.

Our experienced paediatric physiotherapists can assess your child's movement, identify any areas of concern and provide tailored advice and activities to support their development.

How can paediatric physiotherapy help?

Every child is different, which is why treatment is always tailored to your child's individual needs.

Our paediatric physiotherapists use evidence-based assessment and treatment to help children develop strength, balance, coordination and gross motor skills. We work closely with families, providing practical advice, home activities and playful exercises that fit naturally into everyday life.

Our goal is to help every child reach their potential while giving parents the knowledge and confidence to support their child's development at home.

If you have any concerns about your child's development or milestones, we'd be happy to help. Early assessment can provide reassurance, practical advice and, where needed, an individualised plan to support your child's development.

Little Steps Class

If your toddler is finding it difficult to get up onto their feet, stand independently or take their first steps, our Little Steps  class may be the perfect next step.

Designed and led by our experienced paediatric physiotherapists, Little Steps is a fun, supportive group aimed at encouraging children to develop the strength, balance and confidence needed for standing and walking. Through play-based activities and targeted exercises, we help children practise the key skills required for independent mobility in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

Every child develops at their own pace, so we'll always assess whether the class is suitable for your child's individual needs. If you're concerned that your child isn't yet standing or walking, or you'd like to find out whether they would benefit from joining Little Steps, please get in touch. We'd be happy to discuss your child's development and advise whether the class is the right fit.
