Daytot Joey
We are thrilled to have the Daytot Joey available for use within our physiotherapy sessions. Our team is passionate about early intervention and recognises how important crawling is in a child’s development. The Daytot Joey is a fantastic tool that helps support little ones who may be slightly behind, giving them the head start they need.
What is it?
The Joey is an early intervention crawling aid designed to encourage babies to spend time on their tummy and begin moving towards crawling. It helps to build muscle strength, coordination, and head control.
It is an excellent adjunct to physiotherapy, allowing the therapist to provide hands-on facilitation of reciprocal crawling movements.
Alongside the Joey, we also use the Daytot activity mat. This mat is specially designed with high-contrast black and white patterns to support visual and cognitive development, while also providing a practical, non-slip surface.
Who does it benefit?
The Joey is ideal for babies who find tummy time challenging and may be at risk of delays in crawling or other developmental milestones, or who are already showing signs of being slightly behind.
Babies need to be the appropriate size to use the Daytot Joey safely. We have both size options available and will assess each child to ensure the correct fit.
It is particularly beneficial for neonatal babies who may need additional support to begin progressing towards their milestones. Importantly, a baby does not need to have a specific condition or diagnosis to benefit, this tool is suitable for any child who needs a little extra support and encouragement.
How does it work?
The Daytot Joey features a five-point harness that wraps securely around the baby, providing comfort, stability, and support while maintaining a tummy-time position. The harness is fully adjustable to suit each individual child.
Once positioned, the baby can use their arms and legs to push and initiate movement, supported by the wheels underneath the Joey. This allows them to experience moving on their front more easily, helping to strengthen their muscles and become familiar with the movements needed for crawling.
Using the Daytot Joey supports early intervention, which is known to have a significant impact on a baby’s ability to develop new skills and overcome motor challenges during their early years. It provides a valuable head start, helping babies progress with their milestones rather than needing to catch up later.
How we use it in our sessions
Following a thorough assessment, if we feel the Daytot Joey is an appropriate tool, we will incorporate it into the physiotherapy session.
It is used alongside other therapeutic activities, allowing the physiotherapist to guide and support the baby in developing crawling movements and encouraging the use of their arms and legs in a safe and engaging way.
